With self help and personal growth and life by design more popular than ever, so too has the phrase “self sabotage”. Today instead of diving deep into therapy and cracking your childhood trauma to understand why you self sabotage let me give you some really simple life hacks to getting everything you want, all by understanding your mind.

A lot of what I do is mindset work. Why is mindset so important you might wonder. Well let’s break it down today to not only see why our mind is so powerful and how we can take a few simple steps and watch our reality shift.

Mindset, let’s break down what I mean when I say mindset. When I say mindset what I mean to say is our thoughts, the way we think, how we use our mind.

Before we can get into steps that can massively impact your reality, it’s important we understand a few things about our minds and thoughts first. So let’s begin by diving in to two topics - how your brain works and the power of thought.

How your brains work.

It is critical when looking at creating any change in life to clearly understand some basics when it comes to how your mind work. With self help, personal development, mental health conversations on the rise so many are online with their inspirational, do better, want more, change your life cheer teams. This is great, if you understand how your mind works and what it takes to create lasting change. So let’s dive in.

Your brains is in basic terms made up of both the conscious and subconscious mind. That is to say conscious meaning you are aware of it and subconscious that is to say the things you are unaware of or your autopilot settings. Why it is so important to really grasp that both exist and both are at play is because typically your reality is based off your subconscious or autopilot which will always lead you back to square one unless you know what to do about it.

This brings me to the process your mind must go thru in order to create lasting change.

So if you consider it’s your subconscious mind that ultimately creates your reality, you can imagine in order to change your reality you must change your subconscious mind. Simple you might say, but then why do most of us get excited for something new, take new actions for a while, only to “self sabotage” and end up back in an all too familiar place??  Let’s take a look.

How do we change our subconscious mind?

You might be reading this asking yourself that very question, thinking “wait didn’t she say we are unaware of our subconscious?” and so let’s dive even deeper.

You are correct that I mentioned our subconscious mind is on autopilot, running the show whether you like it or not. It’s ONLY job is to maintain status quo in order to keep us safe. In some cases this is a brilliant protection mechanism, where your body will protect you from danger with no thoughts or plans needed. However, when you’ve got big goals or new ideas, this autopilot is your worst nightmare.

Your subconscious mind does not care what you want, it doesn’t care how inspired you are, it doesn’t even care what’s good for you or the vision you have for your future. All it cares about is maintaining your status quo ie what you do most often. It will do anything to keep you on that path of least resistance, on autopilot, doing whatever it is you do the most.

The good news. I’m about to give you the one life hack of all life hacks that will interrupt that autopilot and unlock anything you desire for your life.

In order to change your life, create a new reality, reprogram your subconscious mind you MUST create new habits, aligned with the new reality and keep doing them until they are the new autopilot.

Simple. Not easy.

Now bear with me and I promise by the end of the blog you will truly have everything you need to create any life you desire. Choice is yours and access is in really letting this sync in.

New habits - the simple part of this whole thing. I’m sure if you think about a goal you are currently looking to reach or a goal you’ve tried accomplishing in the past, you can think of a few things, if done daily, would get you to your goal. Maybe you have a sales goal where if you called potential clients daily you’d hit it? Maybe you have a health goal where you know if you swapped soda for water and went for a walk after dinner, you’d reach it no time? Regardless of the goal, typically we’re aware of NEW actions or habits that would take us there. Problem being we quit the action before ever giving it a chance to become habit or new norms..

That changes today.

Reprogramming your subconscious mind goes thru stages. Understanding these stages will provide you with not only a framework for change, but hope that anything is possible and the results you’ve dreamed of ARE for you, your past failures only a result of not fully understanding your brain, the power of thought and what it truly takes.

So let’s map it out. I’ll ask you to picture a cliff, valley and land across the way. A ‘U’ shape if you will, where on this side of the valley is your starting point and across the way your reached goal or new reality. So here you are on this side, your current reality, with a new exciting goal. Perfect. Your conscious mind loves the idea, is 110% in, is flooded with new ideas and runs, guns a blazing, out of the gates. That conscious mind excitement and energy lasts a while. Maybe a few days, maybe a few weeks, but inevitably you crash and have the experience of failure. That’s you sliding down to the bottom of that valley. You feel defeated, frustrated, and typically muster up enough strength to start again, with a new goal, new plan, new action and the cycle repeats.

Until today.

When you slide down into that valley of defeat and frustration know this - all that’s truly happening is you subconscious mind is winning. That initial excitement was powerful but ONLY for your conscious mind, your subconscious mind was NOT ON BOARD. So because as we’ve learned that subconscious mind will do ANYTHING to keep you from changing, and it did, you slide down into that valley and thought it was failure.

Let’s rethink it and give you the access code to the way back out to the other side and your new reality.

  • Let’s recap, you’re starting something new, excited, your conscious mind is all in, your subconscious mind wants nothing to do with it.

  • You take new action and over time subconscious wins leaving you “failing” or “self sabotaging” as many say today.

time to interrupt!

In order to keep going you want to get your conscious and subconscious minds on the same page. How is this done?? Using this first powerful tool the power of your conscious mind to reprogram the subconscious. In other words:

  1. Acknowledge that anything other than the new thought or action is just your subconscious mind kicking and screaming to keep you safe

  2. Connect to your new goal and why it matters to you

  3. Choose thoughts that align with your NEW goal

  4. Continuing taking the NEW action no matter what

  5. Continue long enough until your subconscious mind considers the NEW action the norm

  6. Enjoy your new autopilot or subconscious mind

To visualize it by way of our cliff analogy, you start with conscious mind on board, subconscious mind kicking and screaming. You work your way thru the dip, initial subconscious mind running but using your new tools to ensure both conscious and subconscious mind are on the same page. You make it up and out on the other side where you have a new norm and your subconscious mind is running full steam ahead with your new desired actions rubbing on auto pilot.

Will it take some intention on your part - absolutely. That said, imagine all the goals you’ve ever wanted becoming autopilot programs done without thought, on default leaving you to either live a really smooth easy simple life or with tons of extra energy to create, expand, try something new.

Now we’re not quite done. I know you’re excited, but remember way back when this blog started, I said we would look at two things today - how our brain works and the power of thought. We’ve covered some basics on how your brain works when it comes to change, now let’s dive in to the power of thought.

Power of thought.

Something few people know, and none of us are taught in school, is the process that leads to results nor how powerful thoughts truly are. So let’s teach it here today. It’s simple.

Thoughts become feelings become actions become things.

Said another way, our results in life are initiated by the thoughts we have. Change your thoughts. Change your life.

What’s best is knowing this chronology you get access to interrupting patterns, making small shifts that create big results, ultimately changing your life.

So to piggy back on the early talk of brain pattern and creating new realities getting your subconscious mind on board with new actions, you can see that by looking first at the thoughts you hold, you are more likely to make it to the other side of that cliff.

As you go thru the valley where you are relying solely on the strength of your conscious mind to push thru and keep your NEW actions consistent can you see that what you think about it all has a massive impact!

So what am I to do about my thoughts if they don’t support my success. Simple - CHANGE them!

Your thoughts are just that, thoughts. They are not facts. They are not the truth. They’re simply thoughts. Ideas floating around. So the second powerful tool for today is a follows:

  1. Noticed your thoughts

  2. Ask yourself if they support your future

  3. If the answer is no, ask yourself “what new thought can I have to support my future?”

  4. Adopt the new thought, replacing the old

  5. If old thought pops up (hint - it will) kindly say “thank you for sharing” and quickly adopt the new, supportive thought

You are in control of your mind and while I could geek out further on thoughts and energy and what has thoughts exist, pop up, who is responsible for thoughts, I’ll leave that for another day and another blog.
